We are all aware of the potential pitfalls of trading on the internet. But there are some common scams that people still fall for.
Payment
Never send any money without ever having seen the car. It may seem obvious, but its not uncommon for unscrupulous vendors to try and part you with money before seeing the vehicle. Always take the car for test drive before purchase and always, always deal with the seller from their property or business. Don’t fall into the trap of dealing with people in car parks, layby’s and pubs.
Vendors
Beware of cheques. Cheques can bounce. Consider using bankers drafts when dealing with large sums or insist upon cash. Always take the time to ask a few questions about the buyer and make sure they stack up before selling the car.
The overpayment scam
Never accept payment that is over and above the value of car with the premise that you will pay a third party the difference. This is an out and out scam. Due to an irregularity in banking it is possible for the funds to the paid to your account, at which point you release the car and funds. However due to fraud the money is reversed from your account and you lose not only your property and money too. Never deal with anyone who suggests this, they are fraudsters.
